Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 25 September 2023.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please provide details of how many police officers, fire officers and ambulance officers, wear the defaced union jack on their uniforms.

Have officers been given permission to wear these badges?

Response

No badges as detailed in the request are issued by the services.

Police response

These charity patches have traditionally been worn to remember fallen officers and to support the families of officers who have died in the line of duty. There is no inference within the States of Jersey Police that the wearing of these patches shows allegiance to any gang.

The number of police officers currently choosing to wear the blue line patch is not known. Therefore Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

States of Jersey Police are in the process of reviewing the list of items that may be considered exceptions to currently issued uniform.

States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service response

Uniforms do not display a Union Jack Flag of any design. The number of firefighters and staff currently choosing to wear non-service issue badges is not known. Therefore Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

States of Jersey Ambulance response

Uniforms do not display a Union Jack Flag of any design. The number of paramedics and ambulance staff currently choosing to wear non-service issue badges is not known. Therefore Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) applies.

Justice and Home Affairs directorates will review items that may be considered exceptions to currently issued uniform.
