The Licensing (Jersey) Law 1974 does not require the creation of annual statistics and it is not until 2013 that the Judicial Greffe began to monitor the number of current licences in each category on any annual basis. A more detailed explanation is below.

Article 6 of the Licensing (Jersey) Law 1974 provides that the Licensing Assembly grants licences at sessions where decisions are registered by the Judicial Greffe, but thereafter under Article 10 a licence may be renewed each year on application to the Treasurer of the States.

While Article 10(3)(b) requires the Treasurer to provide a list of renewals to the Judicial Greffier towards the end of each year the separation of responsibilities for registering grants of licences and registering renewal of licences means that statistics of current licences in each Category for each year have not been recorded before 2013. Since 2013 the Judicial Greffe has collated statistics for the Applications and Licences Granted for each year, including figures for the number of licences in each category which were current at the time.

Please see the Judicial Greffe’s figures for First Category Taverner’s Licences. Please note that generally a First Category Taverner’s Licence is held by a pub, however it can also be held by premises which operate under a different business model, such as some restaurants, delicatessens and private hotels.

The number of 1st Category licences current at the date of this request is not held, as the data is only collated by the Judicial Greffe following receipt of all the renewals information for the year from the Treasury.

For 2022 the Judicial Greffe collated statistics show 139 1st Category licences were current.

For 2019 the Judicial Greffe collated statistics show 138 1st Category licences were current.

For 2014 the Judicial Greffe collated statistics show 139 1st Category licences were current.

As explained above the Judicial Greffe does not hold figures for the number of 1st Category licences current for years before 2013.
