Request

Please provide the number of recorded cases of bacterial meningitis in Jersey in the past five years broken down into cases by age categories and gender.

Response

A Freedom of Information response published to www.gov.je in July 2023 provided information on cases of bacterial meningitis from 2017 to 2022 (inclusive):

Meningitis figures (FOI)

As this information is available elsewhere, Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

No cases of culture positive meningococcal bacteraemia were recorded by Health and Community Services’ (HCS’) laboratory in 2023.

As noted in the response referenced above, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from both patients with possible meningitis and those with no evidence of infection (but with other symptoms or conditions requiring such analysis) is sent to HCS’ laboratory for examination. 103 CSF samples were received for culture by HCS’ laboratory throughout 2023.

Article applied

Article 23 - Information accessible to applicant by other means

(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it is reasonably available to the applicant, otherwise than under this Law, whether or not free of charge.

(2) A scheduled public authority that refuses an application for information on this ground must make reasonable efforts to inform the applicant where the applicant may obtain the information.
