Request

A

Please advise how much is spent on the process of sending paper prescriptions are sent to Newcastle which are then monitored by an NHS agency. How many prescriptions are monitored this way? Are prescriptions done internally in the hospital monitored in the same way?

B

How many paper prescriptions are sent to Newcastle? What is the environmental cost of all the paper used?

Response

A and B

In 2023, 1,080,453 paper prescriptions were sent to Newcastle; the cost for this service was £505,609.76. These account for all prescriptions that were issued and dispensed in our island pharmacies.

Hospital prescriptions are not sent away for external processing or monitoring.

The paper used for the prescriptions is not recycled but is FSC certified which means all pulp used to make it is obtained from sustainably resourced sources.
