1. On how many occasions in each of the last five years have police been called to Island schools?

2. On how many occasions in each of the last five years have these callouts been due to weapons, and what weapon in each case?

3. On how many occasions in each of the last five years have complaints been made to the police after violence assaults on school staff?

4. Please provide a list of Island schools ranked by (a) the amount of police call outs, (b) the amount of weapons complaints, and (c) the amount of complaints to the police.

Thanks

Clarification requested

Data held on police callouts to schools includes all incidents that occur on school premises, regardless of the time of day or night, or whether an incident has occurred during school term times or holidays. In many instances, the only link to an incident at a school is that it happens to have occurred on school premises. Examples include traffic collisions in a school car park, intruder alarms, and loose farm animals. The remaining questions of this particular FOI would suggest that the applicant's interest is confined to incidents involving students enrolled and staff employed at each particular school. Clarification is sought.

Clarification received

Ideally I would like a list of the reasons for the call out to be included. But if this takes us out of the 12.5 hour window, I’ll just take the number.

Similarly, ideally I’d like to know about incidents involving students enrolled and staff employed at each particular school, but if triggers any exemptions, I’ll just take the number.

Response

1. & 4(a&c) – Schools are referenced in 1,104 incident logs recorded over the past five years (up to 23 April 2025). Not all incidents necessitated police attendance or involvement.

However, it's important to note that this figure includes instances where a school was mentioned only as a landmark to assist attending officers with directions. These references do not necessarily indicate that the incident occurred at or involved the school directly.

To isolate and provide data only for incidents that actually occurred at specific schools, a manual review of each log entry would be required. This process would exceed the cost limit set out in Article 16(1) of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011.

As a result, this part of the request is respectfully declined.

2, 3 & 4(b) Please see attached table.

Table.pdf

  • 1 Of the 14 incidents, fewer than five involved the threat of violence by a student whilst holding a weapon.
  • 2 Figures are accurate up until 8 April 2025
  • 3 Of the 7 incidents in total, fewer than five involved the threat of violence by a student on a staff member whilst holding a weapon.

Where numbers are fewer than five, disclosure control is applied to avoid identification of individuals. Article 25(2) of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

Articles applied

Article 16 - A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive

(1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations.

Article 25 - Personal information

(2) Information is absolutely exempt information if –

(a) it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is not the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018; and

(b) its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.
