What was the volume (loudness) of the police sirens in 2010 and what is the current volume?
Has the procedure or guidelines around when it is appropriate to use police emergency sirens changed between 2010 and 2025?
Response
In response to your query, the States of Jersey Police can confirm that we currently use the RSG MCS-16 siren, which has an average sound level rating of 115 dB at a distance of 1 metre. This siren meets the accepted standards for emergency service vehicles. Between 2010 and 2025, there have been no significant changes to the sound level specifications or to the operational guidance provided to police officers regarding the use of sirens. Officers are trained to use sirens tactically, primarily to:
• Facilitate safe and efficient progress through traffic or hazardous situations
• Signal to other road users to stop when necessary
This tactical use ensures sirens are employed appropriately and effectively in line with operational needs and public safety considerations.
