Breast screening service - Reporting of Mammograms

May you please confirm, following a scheduled mammogram, the details of what the mammogram report will contain by both the first and second reader.

Please also confirm what professional body guidelines are followed for each part of the report, if the family history is recorded and if so, where that information is gathered from. Please may the response be for :

(1) reporting and family history prior to the review by the Royal College of Radiologist and the British Society of Breast  Radiologists and

(2) following their review, detailing the changes, if any, adopted.

May you also confirm the name of the person who will provide this information.

Response

Mammograms are reported using the Royal College of Radiologists standardised classification of imaging findings (previously published as the Royal College of Radiologists Breast Group breast imaging classification). These are available at the link below:

rcr-publications_guidance-on-screening-and-symptomatic-breast-imaging-fourth-edition_november-2019.pdf

Follow-up recommendations are dependent upon the classification denoted:

  •  M1 or M2 – no significant abnormality / benign pathology; return to screening.
  •  M3 to M5 – abnormal / further investigation is indicated; recall to assessment.

Family history is not formally recorded on the Mammography system, though may be documented in the clinical history within individual patient records and / or referral letters.

No changes to report format were recommended by either the Royal College of Radiologists or the British Society of Breast Radiology following their reviews. Freedom of Information enables access to information held in recorded form. Responses are compiled by the Department’s Freedom of Information Officer, assisted by colleagues in area(s) relevant to the request subject matter.
