FoI response 677761165 (March 2025) gave statistics on attainment levels in Jersey’s schools.

1. The table in paragraph 1 gave data for each school up to 2024. Please provide an updated table including the 2025 figures.

2. The figures on value added in paragraph 2 were for 2023. Please provide the figures for 2024 and 2025.

Response

1. The updated 2025 data in relation to attainment levels will be finalised at the end of November 2025, once all re-marks are received and verified. Therefore, it is currently not held and Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 is applied.

2. The 2024 data has been added to the table below

2025 Value Added analysis is not available due to the cancellation of Key Stage 2 tests during the Covid period. This means that the baseline data previously used to calculate Value Added does not exist.  In line with the Department for Education (DfE) in England, Jersey is not able to apply the previously used calculations for 2025 or the forthcoming 2026 examination results. Therefore, 2025 Value Added figures are not held an Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 is applied.

Please note our value-added methodology is based on the Department for Education’s (DfE) approach to calculating progress, which measures how much students improve during their time in secondary school. It compares their GCSE results with the expected outcomes based on their performance in Key Stage 2 (KS2) tests taken in Year 6.

Some students, such as new arrivals to the island, may not have KS2 scores. These students are excluded from the methodology, along with any students who have been disapplied.

A score of zero indicates that students, on average, made the expected amount of progress. A positive score means students performed better than expected, while a negative score means they performed worse. A score of 1 would suggest that the average student achieved one grade higher in each qualification compared to those with similar prior attainment.

It is important to note that Jersey’s accountability measures differ from those in England. For example, Jersey use the best entry rather than the first entry, and certain qualifications, such as IGCSEs, are accepted in Jersey but not in England. Jersey results cannot be directly compared with those from England.

Comparing datasets across Jersey schools will not provide an accurate reflection due to the differences in characteristics of each school. Jersey’s Education system also includes some academic selection and a mix of fee-paying and non-fee-paying schools.
