Information on facilities offering nursing care services and the number of beds registered for each care home can be found on the Jersey Care Commission's website, linked below:
Jersey Care Commission | Jersey's Independent Care Regulator
As information is available elsewhere, Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.
As noted in a Freedom of Information response published to www.gov.je in March 2025, records held by Health and Care Jersey (HCJ) for care home bed numbers are limited to HCJ facilities. Most care homes on the island are private businesses, and as such, records are not held by HCJ.
Information on HCJ's Sandybrook Nursing Home, including bed numbers and the distribution of these, can be found on the Government of Jersey website:
Sandybrook Nursing Home
3 to 6
With the exception of HCJ inpatients awaiting a care home bed, records are not held by HCJ on the number of people awaiting placement in care homes. As noted above, most care homes on the island are private businesses, and as such, waiting lists for each facility would be held by the individual businesses.
Information on the number of people experiencing a delayed transfer of care whilst waiting in hospital from August 2022 through to October 2023 (inclusive) is available in a Freedom of Information response published to www.gov.je in December 2023:
gov.je/government/freedomofinformation/pages/foi.aspx?ReportID=7028
This response includes a breakdown of these data to show the reason for the delayed transfer of care, including the number of people waiting on a care home transfer, and an explanation of the data limitations and changes in the Patient Administration System / Electronic Patient Record recording options which impact upon reporting capabilities.
As noted in the above referenced response, a patient is considered to be a delayed transfer of care (DTOC) when they have been assessed as medically fit for discharge (MFFD), therapy fit and socially fit. Recording at this level was implemented in HCJ's Patient Administration System in mid-July 2022. Prior to this, only MFFD data was recorded centrally. DTOC data for July 2022 is available in a Freedom of Information response published to www.gov.je in September 2022. The response also includes MFFD data from December 2021 to June 2022, which may be of interest. Please see the link below:
gov.je/government/freedomofinformation/pages/foi.aspx?ReportID=5851
Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied in respect of the information available elsewhere.
Data for the period from November 2023 to December 2024 are provided below. Due to the way delayed transfer data is recorded, the numbers provided show the number of unique patients who were awaiting a nursing care home bed in each reporting period.
| Time period | Number of patients awaiting nursing home placement |
| November to December 2023 | 37 |
| 2024 | 183 |

HCJ is unable to advise how many people are currently on a waiting list for a care home bed. As noted above, with the exception of HCJ inpatients, records are not held by HCJ on the number of people awaiting placement in care homes as most care homes on the island are private businesses, and waiting lists for each facility would be held by the individual businesses. Therefore, Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.
8
As of 17 December 2025, there were 8 individuals occupying a hospital bed while awaiting a space in a nursing care home. This figure represents a point-in-time snapshot based on current internal reporting processes for patients whose discharge is delayed pending availability of nursing home capacity.
Numbers may fluctuate daily depending on patient need and community placement availability; therefore, this value reflects the position on the date stated above rather than a continually updated live count. It is not possible to provide data for Freedom of Information responses as at the date of release, owing to the requirement for essential assurance reviews and approval processes which must be completed prior to release of information into the public domain.
