Figures for deaths recorded as suicide are published in Public Health’s annual mortality report. Inquests for deaths which may be suicide can take some time to be concluded, and as such, reporting in arrears for deaths by suicide is standard practice. Data covering the years 2010 to 2023 is available in the latest report, linked below. Data for 2024 and 2025 will be included in future iterations of the report; deaths for 2024 will be published in the Jersey Mortality Report 2025 (scheduled for publication in September 2026), and deaths for 2025 will be published in the Jersey Mortality Report 2026 (for publication in 2027).

Where information is available elsewhere, Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

The figures presented include deaths where the underlying cause of death was recorded as ‘intentional self-harm’ or of ‘undetermined intent’, in line with U.K. and international best practice for reporting suicide statistics.

Of the 130 deaths recorded as suicide from 2010 to 2023 (inclusive):

▪ Female: 37

▪ Male: 93

Figures for deaths recorded as suicide from 2010 to 2023 (inclusive) by age group are shown in the table below using groupings aligned with U.K. reporting standards.

Nationality is not recorded or routinely maintained within mortality or death registration systems, nor is ethnicity routinely or consistently recorded on Jersey death certificates. Information identifying whether individuals were temporary work permit holders at the time of death is not held. Consequently, it is not possible to provide a breakdown of deaths by ethnicity or nationality, nor report the number of deaths for people holding temporary work permits. Therefore, Article 3 of the Freedom of Information Jersey Law 2011 applies.
