A. How many people have been diagnosed with Sepsis in 2025?

B. How many contracted following a procedure at the hospital (incl out patients)

C. How many people have died as a consequence this year.

Response

A and B

The data provided in this response represent cases where sepsis was confirmed as a diagnosis at presentation or in the course of an admission at Jersey General Hospital (JGH), irrespective of the reason for attendance at hospital or main condition treated.

Cases meeting the criteria for inclusion have been identified by the diagnosis codes assigned to the episode of care in the Electronic Patient Record. Data are derived from reporting by discharge date. As such, patients who were admitted prior to 1 January 2025 but discharged after this date will be included. For the same reason, patients admitted prior to 31 December 2025 but discharged after this date will not be included in the numbers.

Clinical Coding of a patient’s admission is carried out after discharge from hospital. Data are not yet complete for the whole of 2025, and subsequently, figures may be subject to change as Clinical Coding of admissions continues and completion levels increase.

All codes that can be indexed under the lead term ‘sepsis’ in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) were used to extract the data for analysis of sepsis admissions in JGH. Records were then reviewed.

The total number of patients discharged from JGH in 2025 with a code attributed for a recorded diagnosis of sepsis is 28.

Sepsis was documented as relating to a procedure in fewer than five of the cases identified. As numbers are small, disclosure control has been applied to protect individuals from identification, and Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied to protect the privacy of individuals.

C

Fewer than five of the 28 people identified with a diagnosis of sepsis passed away at JGH; none of these had been diagnosed with sepsis documented as relating to or resulting from a procedure.

Health and Care Jersey does not hold records for deaths in the community, other healthcare settings, or deaths of Jersey residents elsewhere in 2025 where sepsis has been recorded as a cause of death.

Mortality data is taken from the information collected at death registration. Due to the delays which can sometimes occur with registration of deaths, it is standard practice for mortality data to be reported in arrears. Cause of death information for 2025 is not yet available; mortality cause coding is carried out in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10), and is completed externally by the Office for National Statistics. Information on deaths occurring during the calendar year 2025 is scheduled to be published on 15 October 2026, as per the Public Health Intelligence publication schedule linked below. Data may be affected upon conclusion of any inquests that remain open at the time of reporting.
