A. What is the five-year survival rate for cancer in Jersey?
B. What percentage of people receive treatment for cancer within 62 days of the first referral?
C. How many radiologists are on the island?
D. How many clinical oncologists are on the island?
Response
A and B
Five year survival data is not currently available to report from records held by Health and Care Jersey. Therefore, Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.
The Channel Islands Cancer Report provides data for incidence and mortality, but does not include survival outcomes.
Health and Care Jersey is not yet able to report on the 62-day cancer pathway, as diagnosis and treatment start dates cannot be directly reported from central record systems. The upgraded Somerset Cancer Registry is expected to support this functionality once fully implemented, and we are hopeful this will become available later this half of the year.
Oncology Department data on referral-to-treatment for systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) records 96.2% of patients as currently starting treatment within 31 days:
- 31.8% start within 7 days
- 40.2% start within 14 days
- 17.7% start within 21 days
- 6.5% start within 31 days
3.74% patients are recorded as starting after 31 days; reasons for this include patient choice and delays in port insertion.
C
Health and Care Jersey currently have nine Radiologists working on-island (with a tenth due to join the team), and one Radiologist who works remotely.
In addition, there is Tele-radiology support / cover.
D
Cancer treatment on-island is delivered by both medical oncologists and clinical oncologists:
- Medical oncologists provide systemic anti-cancer therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted treatments.
- Clinical oncologists are dual trained to deliver both systemic anti-cancer therapies and radiotherapy in the U.K.
Jersey has no radiotherapy service on island. As a result, all contracted oncologists practice medical oncology only locally, with radiotherapy delivered off island.
Since January 2026, the oncology workforce has expanded from three full time consultants plus locum cover to four full-time consultants, supported by a part-time consultant shared with Cambridge; this has reduced reliance on locums and strengthened links to research and off-island radiotherapy services.
