There has been no formal organisational restructure implemented in order to create an ‘Office of the Chief Pharmacist’; the term is generally used as a functional description for the roles supporting the professional leadership, medicines governance and medicines policy responsibilities associated with the Chief Pharmacist role.

The Chief Pharmacist function itself is statutory and longstanding within Health and Care Jersey (HCJ) and relates to the professional leadership of pharmacy, medicines governance, and the safe and lawful use of medicines, including the administration and discharge of relevant statutory and professional responsibilities in Jersey.

The roles supporting these functions sit within the wider HCJ Pharmacy establishment and are funded from the HCJ Pharmacy budget. These posts have been established through the usual workforce planning, grading and approval processes used across the States of Jersey, with approval for the creation of roles required to support the function in 2024 given by the former Chief Officer of Health and Care Jersey and the former Medical Director.

The Pharmacy department is currently subject to a restructuring exercise; this is expected to be concluded by the end of May 2026.
