Response

The referenced Environment Department does not exist within the Schedule Public Authority (SPA); however the Natural Environment Directorate and Regulation Directorate form the Environment function within the SPA’s structure, and there are currently 172 employees of which 166.7 are FTE as at end of May 2026.

As a result of the Target Operating Model (TOM) reorganisation, a number of functions moved between departments in 2018. Some new departments were created and some departments ceased to exist in their previous form, consequently altering the number of officers in each team/department, therefore, the data between 2016 and 2026 is not comparable.
