Request

A

Are chief officers of ministries and non-ministry departments allowed under States personnel policies to work from home during normal Monday to Friday office hours?

B

How many chief officers have worked from home this year and for approximately how many days?

C

What procedures are in place to ensure that chief officer who work from home do actually undertake work?

Response

A

Chief officers are contractually expected to carry out their roles irrespective of the hours taken to fulfil their obligations. From time to time such officers are able to make a judgement about where and how they fulfil those obligations which may include working from home if appropriate. Such an approach is standard practice for very senior managers in both the private and public sectors.

B

We do not monitor whether or not chief officers have worked from home nor for how long, if they have done so.

C

There is no specific policy in place – chief officers are expected to fulfil their duties irrespective of the location of where those duties may be discharged.
