Chief Executive to leave his post

18 February 2011

The States Chief Executive, Bill Ogley, is to leave his post later this year. Jersey’s Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, and Mr Ogley have agreed to a mutual termination of employment which will take effect on 31 May 2011.

Mr Ogley came to Jersey in April 2003 as Chief Executive to the Policy and Resources Committee. He was recruited to lead on the changes required to implement Ministerial Government and then to become the Chief Executive to the Council of Ministers and to lead the public sector.

Senator Le Sueur said “Since 2003 the States has undergone fundamental reform of its political, officer and fiscal structures. We have been through a period of turmoil, with the Historical Child Abuse Enquiry, the global recession and increasing international pressure on our fiscal structures.

“Despite this, we have made good progress on achieving the objectives of the first 2 Strategic Plans. As Chief Executive, Bill has played an important part in delivering these successes and in responding effectively to the pressures. I thank him for his sterling work.

“However, we are making savings across the States and we have to look at every possibility. I am therefore carrying out a review of the senior corporate structures and roles. After 8 successful years Bill and I have agreed that now would be a good time for change at the top of the civil service. I thank him for a job well done and wish him all the best in his next new venture.”

Mr Ogley said “Being Chief Executive has been a privilege and I will be sad to leave Jersey. It is a wonderful Island with a bright future. The States has a great workforce, with some very able people and one of my greatest joys has been to watch them grow and succeed.

“I believe 8 years is a long time in a job as demanding as this one. I hope my departure will create an opportunity to review the senior structure and to bring new ideas and a fresh perspective.

“While leaving Jersey will be a wrench I am looking forward to moving back to the UK to be closer to family and friends and to starting the next new and exciting chapter of my life.”
