Metal packaging magic

27 August 2013

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is giving festival goers to Jersey Live a preview of their next recycling campaign this weekend which aims to increase the amount of household metal packaging collected for recycling.

Mechanical Technician, Ben Fernandes and Lauren Hucker, a Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate in the TTS Mechanical Engineering workshop have been designing and building a larger than life ‘wizard’ to be the centre of the new campaign. The campaign has a magic theme to promote the fact that metal packaging like cans, tin foil and aerosols can be recycled over and over again into other objects like ladders, cars, planes and cans.

The 'wizard' has been built using a metal framework which is filled with metal packaging collected from the island’s recycling banks.

Ian Rolls, who worked with TTS last year to design ‘Mr Robot’ for the electrical recycling campaign, is also part of the 'Wizard' team. Ian has been overseeing the Wizard design and has upcycled cans to create the wizard’s face and cloak decorations to produce a magical character.

Recycling Manager, Emma Richardson, said “Lots of people recycle their cans but don’t realise that food and drink tins, aerosols, metal jar lids, foil and foil packaging can all be recycled in the household metal packaging banks.  It is so important for metal to be separated from general rubbish as metals can be recycled over and over and over again, saving energy and raw materials every time. We hope that our new campaign will catch people’s attention and as a result we will collect more metal packaging for recycling.”

Mechanical Engineering Manager, Phil Dodd, said “Creating the wizard has been a fantastic opportunity for our team to put all their skills into practice and to demonstrate their creativity as well as their technical expertise. The wizard is a different way to bring the importance of recycling metal packaging to people’s attention and we are looking forward to putting the Wizard on display around this Island this autumn.”

Household metal packaging (food and drink cans, aerosols, metal lids (i.e. jam jar lids), foil and foil packaging can be recycled at all of the 19 ‘bring bank’ recycling facilities located Island-wide, at the Household Recycling Centre (Gate 4, Bellozanne) and in the Parish recycling collections in St Helier (cans only), St Lawrence, St Mary, St John and Trinity.
