St James open day

Young people, parents and the public will have a chance to see the new Youth Arts facility at St James on Saturday 14 March from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Senior Youth Worker for the project, Carmel Butel, said "It will be another exciting day for Youth Arts Jersey.  After the official opening by HRH Princess Anne last week, we wanted to showcase our new venue at St James and open it up for members of the public to see the exciting changes that have been made. It’s taken years of hard work to get to this point so we want to share it with the community."

Young musicians will be performing live throughout the day, and acts include the newly-established ukulele club who met the Princess Royal last week.

Strong tradition of music

"Youth Arts Jersey is continuing the strong tradition that started with Sounds Workshop and then grew at La Motte Street of being dedicated to supporting musical opportunities for young people," Mrs Butel added.

The centre has three fully-equipped rehearsal rooms as well as the facilities for music recording and gig opportunities. The project has just announced its new patron will be Jack Casady, legendary bassist and former band member of Jefferson Airplane.  

Arts-based opportunities

With its new venue and name change, Youth Arts Jersey has diversified and now also offers a variety of other arts-based opportunities for young people in Jersey. There will be performances from both junior and senior dance groups, who will showcase the different styles of dance they have been working on since September last year, including Charleston and Bollywood.

Members of the public will also be able to see the impressive new radio station – Radio Youth FM – and media suites which have been used for animation workshops.

Youth Arts Jersey is managed by the Jersey Youth Service, which now also makes its home at St James along with the Princes Trust and Youth Enquiry Service.

Education, Sport and Culture Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said "This is a great opportunity, as this is an Island resource, for members of the public to come along and see for themselves what has been achieved in a very short time helping to make our Youth Service one of the best in the UK."
