Support for new entrants to Island fishing industry

13 June 2017

The Minister for the Environment has launched a scheme to encourage more fishermen into the industry.

People who want to become fishermen face many costs, including buying a fishing licence. Under this new scheme, which has been developed jointly by the Department of the Environment, and the Jersey Fishermen’s Association (JFA), a fishing vessel licence will be loaned to the fisherman.

The States is keen to support the commercial fishing sector by reducing the barriers to setting up for young people. The scheme has been developed in a way that will create an incentive for new entrants to make a tangible and long-term commitment to fishing.

The loan will be awarded for a set period of time and under set criteria. The scheme will be reviewed regularly to ensure it is working as intended, and, importantly, doesn’t significantly disadvantage established fishermen.

Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce said “Support for our rural industries is important and it’s been a long-term aim of mine to reduce the barriers to entering commercial fishing, in line with the Council of Ministers commitment to diversifying the economy. This is a focused initiative that could make a real difference to a number of suitably qualified people and I’m pleased we’ve been able to work with the JFA to bring it about.”
JFA President Don Thompson said “The JFA is pleased to have worked with the Department of the Environment on this practical and straightforward scheme. I look forward to fishermen taking advantage of the scheme to help grow and sustain the industry now, and into the future.”
