Switch off for Earth Hour this weekend

23 March 2017

Islanders are being asked to join millions of people around the world in turning their lights off as part of Earth Hour 2017 which takes place on Saturday 25 March between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm.
As a show of commitment to reducing energy consumption across the public sector, the States of Jersey will be switching off the lights at Mont Orgueil and Elizabeth Castle, Victoria Avenue Promenade, St Brelade’s Bay, Liberation Square, and on the Fort Regent dome.

Department of the Environment Eco Active Programme Manager, Jane Burns, said, “We’d really love to get as many Islanders as possible to switch their unnecessary lights off at home and at work for Earth Hour this Saturday. It is a great reminder that small actions can reduce our everyday energy use.

“Eco active businesses are getting involved as part of their wider work to reduce their energy consumption. Jersey is working towards an 80% reduction in carbon emissions from energy use by 2050. Eco active offers support to help businesses take control of energy use. Reducing energy saves money so it makes good sense from an environmental and financial perspective.”
