Chief Minister leads delegation to China

16 November 2018

The Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, is leading an official delegation to the People’s Republic of China from 19-23 November. The Chief Minister will visit Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing to demonstrate Jersey’s commitment to broadening and deepening its relationships with key international partners.

In Hong Kong, Senator Le Fondré will meet regional policy makers, representatives from the financial services industry, as well as digital entrepreneurs to raise awareness of the expertise and high-quality services that Jersey has to offer. He will refresh existing commercial links and explore future opportunities, particularly in the fast-growing digital and FinTech sectors.

In Shanghai, the Chief Minister will promote the Island’s cultural identity by strengthening existing educational links between secondary schools, and raise the profile of Jersey’s expertise in financial services in mainland China.

In Beijing, Senator Le Fondré will discuss the potential for further bilateral international agreements, consolidate existing relationships and highlight wider opportunities for trade and investment partnerships. He said: “This visit maintains our focus on building relationships across the globe, on enhancing Jersey’s international reputation and on expanding our network of international agreements.

“The External Relations Minister was furthering these aims in the Middle East this week. This delegation to China continues this work, with a programme spanning financial services, digital entrepreneurship, trade and our growing educational links. A number of the Island’s secondary schools have existing links with counterparts in China. These relationships offer young Islanders valuable opportunities to engage internationally.”
