DfI simplifying parking zones

​The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, has asked for the law to be amended to change parking disc zones to paycards/PayByPhone zones.

A review on the consistency of parking charges and restrictions on the main roads in St Helier, administered by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), revealed issues with the remaining few areas of disc parking. Changing to paycard/PayByPhone zones will reduce the number of different parking systems, making it simpler and more consistent. The review also concluded that in some locations unloading bays would better serve patrons.

DfI proposes that changes be made at

  • Commercial Buildings
    • existing restrictions are to be replaced by 20-minute unloading bays for commercial vehicles and one-hour paycard/PayByPhone zones for those visiting the shops and businesses
    • the existing six-hour disc zone would then become a two-hour paycard/PayByPhone parking area. (Boat owners needing long-stay parking facilities could use Pier Road or La Collette car parks.)
  • Mount Bingham
    • existing three-hour disc zone near Green Street is to be replaced by two-hour paycard/PayByPhone zone
  • Roseville Street
    • existing disc zone changes to a two-hour paycard/PayByPhone zone

It is hoped that these changes will help reduce the current abuse of parking rules and provide a higher of turnover of vehicles in these areas.

The changes will come into force following alterations to the law, which will happen in the next few weeks.

Deputy Noel said “We have these three small areas which are regulated by using a yellow parking disc. It seems sensible to bring them in line with the rest of our roadside parking, simplifying the payment options.”
