Minimum Wage to rise again next month

From 1 October the minimum wage will rise in Jersey for all employees over the age of 16 to £8.02 per hour.

The increase follows a five percent increase to the minimum wage on 1 April this year. The two-stage minimum wage increase comes after Social Security Minister Deputy Judy Martin accepted the Employment Forum’s recommendation last October for a total 6.9 percent pay rise – the highest annual percentage increase in a decade – for employees aged 16 and over.

The 6.9% rise equates to an extra £1,082 per year from October for employees working a 40-hour week.

Deputy Judy Martin said: “I am really pleased that the second stage of the pay rise is set to come in next month. This is the first time since the Employment Law came into force in 2005 that the minimum wage has increased twice in one year. This allowed a more significant overall increase in 2019 with a longer period of notice for businesses. It is important that employers ensure that their staff are paid the correct rate from 1 October.”

The Employment Forum is due to recommend a minimum wage increase for 2020 next month.
