10,000 apply to EU Settlement Scheme

31 January 2020

With the United Kingdom formally leaving the European Union today, 10,000 Jersey residents with EU nationality have successfully applied for the Jersey EU Settlement Scheme. The scheme, which enables EU citizens resident in Jersey to continue living in the Island after Brexit, opened in January 2019.

To apply to the scheme, EU nationals must submit an application form and provide their passport or national ID card as proof of identity. Subject to criminality checks, people will be granted either Pre-Settled Status (if they have lived in Jersey for under 5 years) or Settled Status (if they have lived in Jersey for more than 5 years).

Most applications have come from Portuguese nationals (62% of the total), Polish nationals (14% of the total) and Romanian nationals (10% of the total). To date, 80% of people who have applied have been granted their status without having to submit any additional documentation.

To date, no application has been refused.

Constable Len Norman, Minister for Home Affairs, said: “I’m pleased that so many members of the Island’s EU community have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme. While the scheme is open until 31 December 2020, I would recommend that any EU nationals looking to stay in Jersey beyond that date make their application in good time.”
