Toucan crossing approved for Pont Marquet

14 April 2021

A Ministerial Decision has been signed to install a Toucan Crossing at a section of the Railway Walk in St Brelade.

The crossing will be placed on La Rue du Pont Marquet where the road meets the Railway Walk, allowing both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely.

Street lighting will be installed on both approaches to the crossing as well as over landing areas on the Railway Walk and granite paving on the path will be installed as it meets the road.

This, as well as the Government's Safer Routes to Schools initiative, will ensure children in St Brelade who walk or cycle to Les Quennevais and Mont Nicole schools can enjoy a safer route to travel along.

The project will cost £150,000 and will be funded by the Climate Emergency Fund.

Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said: "The aim of this crossing is to make the Railway Walk safer and more accessible for Islanders, encouraging people to become more active.

"As part of our Inspiring Active Travel policy, we are committed to increasing the safety of our roads for pedestrians and cyclists and encouraging people to use greener modes of transport. Improving these facilities will help towards us achieving our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030."
