Teacher training applications open

26 January 2023

Islanders who want to train on-Island to become a teacher have until 16 February to apply for the Jersey Graduate Teacher Training Programme (JGTTP).

The JGTTP – which has been offered for over 10 years – allows graduates to train on-Island to become teachers. It was launched to offer an alternative to UK-based training, and ease recruitment pressures in local schools.

Following an initial launch in July, bursaries are being offered for people training to teach in shortage subjects, including science (biology, chemistry, physics), English, mathematics, computing and business studies.

This means there are now three routes available for aspiring teachers, designed to suit different types of learners:

  • Route 1: In-class and structured learning with bursary support (shortage subjects only). Trainee teachers in shortage subjects can access a non-taxable £25,000 bursary during their training year
  • Route 2: Direct employment. Trainees are employed directly by a school and earn £35,000. Trainees may also be able to access student finance, depending on their household income
  • Route 3: In-class and structured learning (for non-shortage subjects). Trainees may also be able to access student finance, depending on their household income

Interviews will take place before Easter, and successful applications will either begin their training in June/July (Route 2) or be working in school by September (Route 1 and 3).

Islanders who want to find out more about the programme, how to apply, and what to expect can attend an information session on:

  • Monday 30 January (12.30 and 13.30) at 28-30, The Parade
  • Tuesday 31 January (18.15 and 17.15) at the Education Building, Highlands Campus
  • Monday 13 February (18.15 and 19.15) online

The sessions will be an informal chance to find out more, but anyone who wants to attend should email education.recruitment@gov.je to register their interest.

Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said “For many Islanders, the prospect of re-training as a teacher would involve travelling off-Island, and the additional expense and disruption that would cause. The JGGTP has been designed to make teacher training more accessible to Islanders of all ages, by making it possible to train on-Island.

“The JGTTP is a key part of ensuring that the Island has the ability to train and retrain skilled graduate teachers. This – in turn - ensures that children and young people have access to the highquality teaching that they need to thrive."

Group Director of Education, Seán O’Regan, said “Teaching is a most fulfilling and rewarding career. The JGGPT is open to recent graduates, as well as people who are looking for a career change. I would encourage any interested Islanders to speak to the recruitment team to find out more.”
