Recruitment campaign begins at States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service have launched their latest recruitment campaign, aiming to attract both on-call and full-time firefighters to the team. 

No experience is needed as full training is given but the challenging role of a firefighter means they are looking for people who show enthusiasm for working in a team and with the community; people with a positive, can-do, professional approach; people who recognise the value of rules and procedures but are also innovative and can challenge appropriately. 

Recruits will also need the ability to deal sensitively with members of the public in difficult and emotional situations and the ability to deliver under pressure, often with great courage and in distressing circumstances. 

Deputy Chief Fire officer Jane Philpott said, “This recruitment campaign presents an incredible opportunity for individuals to join our firefighting team and contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our community. 

"We are particularly keen to strengthen our team of on-call firefighters as they play a crucial role in responding to emergencies in the island. This position is ideal for those who are looking to contribute to their community on a part-time basis while maintaining other employment. It’s extremely beneficial for employers as we train for core skills such as teamwork, leadership, medical and trauma first responder skills a valuable addition to any workforce.” 

To encourage prospective candidates to explore these roles, the service is organising two practical taster sessions. The sessions are designed to give individuals a flavour of what it's like to be a firefighter, offering an interactive experience that showcases the physical and mental demands of the role. 

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in simulated firefighting exercises, learn about the various aspects of the job, and engage with experienced firefighters and the recruitment team.

Station Commander Craig Channing, who is leading the recruitment campaign said “We invite all individuals who possess a strong sense of community, physical fitness, and resilience to join us at one of these taster sessions. It's an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience and ask questions to help determine if a firefighting career is right for you. 

“Upon application, you’ll need to pass a series of tests  we’re keen to show you those tests and guide you in how to prepare for them throughout the process. Passing these tests are important and they’re a gateway to the final job interview, everyone who passes is offered an interview. You’ll be joining a great team, and we welcome applications from any individual who meets the qualifying criteria.”
