XL Bully legislation changes - movement in and out of Jersey

15 February 2024

From 24 February 2024, XL Bully type dogs will require licencing to travel in and out of Jersey.

Owners wishing to travel off-Island with their XL Bully type dog will need to:

  1. Apply for an export licence from the Animal Health and Welfare team at rva@gov.je
  2. Get written confirmation that entry with an XL Bully type dog will be accepted from the competent authority in all the countries they are travelling to or through.

This update to legislation applies only to the travel in and out of Jersey with these types of dogs. It does not impact XL Bully type dogs currently residing in Jersey that will not be travelling in and out of Jersey.

This update follows changes to UK legislation that came into effect on 31 December 2023, where it became against the law in England and Wales to sell, abandon, give away or breed from an XL Bully. It is also illegal to have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle.

If owners think their pet could be confused for an XL Bully type dog, they should contact the Animal Health and Welfare team at: rva@gov.je.

Islanders can check if their dog fits the characteristics of an XL Bully here: XL Bully conformation standard - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

Dogs on the banned list are referred to as types rather than breeds because they are not recognised breeds by the Kennel Club.
