The Minister for Sustainable Economic Development has lodged a law to update Jersey’s
existing alcohol licensing regime with a more proportionate and modern replacement.
If approved by the States Assembly in January, this law will mean greater flexibility in licence
conditions for businesses, a reduction in the number of licence categories and an end to the
need for some businesses to hold multiple licences (and pay multiple fees) for the same set of
premises.
The new Law would see responsibility for alcohol licensing move away from the Royal Court and
to the Jersey Gambling Commission (which will be renamed to the Alcohol and Gambling
Commission).
This change will not only create a clearer mechanism for appeals but will also
speed up the process and bring policy decisions such as drinks promotions into the control of
the States Assembly, rather than the Attorney General.
