The Government of Jersey, through its Building a Safer Community, BASC, initiative, is proud to
announce the launch of the Safe Places Scheme, a community-driven effort to create a network
of safe, welcoming locations across the Island for anyone feeling vulnerable, intimidated, or at
risk.
From banks and cafés to Parish Halls and sports clubs, businesses and organisations across
Jersey are invited to register as ‘Safe Places’, offering refuge and support to those in need.
The initiative aligns with key government strategies including the Violence Against Women and
Girls, VAWG, Report, the Disability Strategy, and the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
Strategy, all of which highlight the urgent need for accessible safety and support across Jersey.
Registered ‘Safe Places’ will provide a welcoming and secure environment where individuals
can wait or seek shelter. Trained staff will respond with empathy and care, and will provide the
support needed, whether that is contacting a trusted person, calling emergency services or
arranging transport. Staff in ‘Safe Places’ will receive appropriate training to ensure they can
offer meaningful support in moments of need, without putting themselves at risk.
Islanders will be able to find a registered business or organisation of the scheme as the ‘Safe
Place’ will display a distinctive window sticker and be listed on the Safe Places app and
website. The Safe Places app, available on both iOS and Android, features a “Get me to my
nearest Safe Place now” panic button and voice activation for accessibility.
The Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Deputy Mary Le Hegarat said: “This initiative sits at
the heart of our Building a Safer Community Framework, which brings together Jersey’s efforts
to tackle inequality, promote inclusion, and improve community safety.
“We welcome businesses and organisations across the Island to register as a ‘Safe Place’. Your
participation as a Safe Place may seem small, but it can make a life-changing difference in a
moment of vulnerability. We are proud for this opportunity to collaborate with businesses,
charities, and public services to build a stronger, more compassionate community for all
Islanders.”
Building a Safer Community Coordinator, Cirsty De Gruchy Moseley said: “Everyone deserves
to feel safe in their community. Whether someone is experiencing anxiety, harassment, or
simply needs a moment of reassurance, Safe Places will be there to offer a friendly face and
practical support.
“The Safe Places Scheme has already demonstrated its impact across the UK, where it has
supported vulnerable individuals across many counties by providing safe, welcoming spaces in
moments of need. Jersey is known for its strong community spirit, and we’ve seen time and
again how Islanders come together to support one another. I’m confident this initiative will
thrive here, not only enhancing public safety but also fostering greater inclusivity across our
Island.”
