The Minister for Sustainable Economic Development has presented the Colin Powell Award 2025 to Jersey’s brightest young economist, Hubert Libich, recognising his outstanding achievement in last year’s Future Economist Essay Competition.
The competition attracted an impressive number of well researched and thought provoking submissions, offering insightful analysis on key economic themes including trade, inflation and economic growth.
Hubert’s winning essay explored topical challenges in global markets and barriers to trade – issues that many world leaders and economists are currently grappling with. What set Hubert apart was his ability to combine economic theory with historical and political context. This interdisciplinary approach reflects a unique talent he plans to develop further through his upcoming studies in History, Politics and Economics at a leading UK university.
Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, said: “I was proud to present the Colin Powell Award to Jersey’s brightest young economist, Hubert. His essay on the importance of free trade offered a clear and balanced examination of how open markets can shape economic growth at a time when global policymakers are increasingly questioning their value. It is inspiring to see such maturity of thought from the next generation; their understanding of complex economic issues will be invaluable for Jersey’s future. Hubert’s essay was one of many outstanding submissions, and I would like to thank all the students for their thoughtful contributions.”
Chief Economist, Tom Holvey, added: “Once again, the Competition for the coveted Colin Powell Award has revealed an impressive breadth of budding future economists. This year’s submissions were exceptionally well researched, insightful, and thought provoking. Jersey is fortunate to have such keen young minds – individuals who will no doubt play a vital role in tackling the Island’s future economic challenges.”
