HCJ Discovery Day to help “grow" Jersey's healthcare workforce

20 April 2026

Islanders are being encouraged to consider a career in healthcare and to apply for nursing degrees delivered locally by Health and Care Jersey's (HCJ) Faculty of Health Education Centre.

The opportunity forms part of HCJ's commitment to “growing our own" workforce. This long‑term approach focusses on developing local talent to support a safe, sustainable and resilient health service for Jersey, while strengthening succession planning and reducing reliance on off‑Island recruitment.

This year, up to 25 places are available for adult nursing degrees. Opportunities in midwifery and Children and Young People's nursing are offered on an alternating annual basis. The Operating Practice degree programme for this year is now full.

Based at Jersey General Hospital, the Faculty of Health Education offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, enabling Islanders to build long‑term careers in health and care while remaining on the Island.

Since the education centre underwent some university partnership changes in September 2013, 117 student nurses have begun their training with Health and Care Jersey, with 60 undergraduate learners currently studying. In addition, HCJ has supported 11 student midwives (seven now qualified) and 13 Operating Department Practice students, with 10 currently qualified and working in clinical practice.

The HCJ Education Centre is a modern, inter‑professional learning environment, purpose-built to support healthcare education. Facilities include classroom‑style teaching spaces and two simulation suites, allowing students to develop clinical skills through realistic, simulated learning in a safe and supportive environment that mirrors clinical practice.

To help prospective applicants find out more, senior lecturers and practice education facilitators are hosting a Discovery Open Day featuring interactive workshops, programme guidance and one-to-one advice. Some current students will also be present to share their experiences and answer questions.

Two drop‑in sessions will be held at the Education Centre, Peter Crill House, Newgate Street, Jersey General Hospital, on Saturday 25 April, between 10am and 12.30pm and between 1.30pm and 4pm.

Courses start in September 2026, with limited places available. Islanders are encouraged to submit applications by 1 July 2026. Funding options can also be discussed during the Discovery Day and on an individual basis.

Students who successfully complete their degree programme are guaranteed employment in Jersey.

Islanders should apply to attend the Discovery Day using the booking link.

Islanders can also apply for a degree place by emailing Dr Wendy Stevens at w.stevens@health.gov.je

Joe Dunne, Mental Health Nursing student said: Studying nursing on the island was an incredibly rewarding experience. Being part of a smaller cohort meant I built strong relationships with my peers and the Education Centre staff, and the small class sizes allowed for detailed, interactive discussions that really deepened my understanding.

"I also benefited from close supervision when learning practical skills, which built my confidence before going out on placement. Completing placements in Jersey exposed me to a diverse range of patients and services, helping me develop valuable skills for my future career.

The support and encouragement from the Education Centre staff made a real difference, and I genuinely felt welcomed as part of the team throughout my three years of study. I'd strongly encourage anyone interested to come along to the Discovery Day to find out more about the nursing degrees available on island."

Hazel McWhinnie, Dean of Nursing, Midwifery, AHP Education said: We are proud to encourage Islanders to consider a career in healthcare through our undergraduate nursing and midwifery programmes.

“Studying through the Faculty of Health Education Centre, based at the General Hospital, enables students to gain a high‑quality education while continuing to live at home, making a career in healthcare more accessible than ever. In addition, all students who successfully complete their studies are guaranteed a role with Health and Care Jersey, offering a defined and reliable pathway into employment.

“A career in healthcare offers a rewarding and varied path, with opportunities to grow across many roles and stages of education. We encourage Islanders to consider how a healthcare career could allow them to make a meaningful difference while contributing to the Island's future workforce.

“We encourage anyone interested to attend our Discovery Open Day on 25 April to find out more about the opportunities available."
