The Minister for Housing, Deputy Sam Mézec, has lodged a proposition States Assembly | P.50/2026
seeking States Assembly approval for the appointment of new members to the Rent Tribunal.
The recruitment process was undertaken independently and to a robust standard, overseen by
the Jersey Appointments Commission. The nominees proposed by the Minister reflect the
recommendations of the recruitment panel officers.
The debate on the proposed appointments is scheduled for the States sitting commencing 24
March 2026.
The Minister intends to bring the Residential Tenancy (Jersey) Amendment Law 2025 into
force by Order ahead of the pre-election period.
Further communications will follow soon to announce key dates and provide guidance to
landlords and tenants, supporting them in transitioning to the new law.
The amendment law modernises the Residential Tenancy (Jersey) Law 2011, strengthens
protections for tenants and landlords, and introduces a new Rent Tribunal as a key mechanism
for resolving disputes on the lawfulness of rent increases during tenancies.
Deputy Mézec said:
“I am very pleased to be bringing forward this proposition to appoint the members of the Rent
Tribunal.
“The candidates put forward bring a strong mix of professional expertise,
community insight and practical experience, and together they provide the balance needed for
a fair and effective Tribunal.
“Establishing this Tribunal is an important step in delivering the improved protections and
clearer processes envisaged in the updated residential tenancy legislation.”
The Minister will provide further information on the commencement of the new law closer to
the time, including details on the Tribunal’s operation and how Islanders will be able to access
its services.
