The Building a Safer Community, BASC, team – part of the Government of Jersey – are celebrating another successful year empowering Jersey's young people to make informed choices and keep themselves and our community safe.
This school year, over 1,000 Year 8s across 12 secondary schools engaged in BASC Education Days, learning about key community safety issues from our front-line partners.
Topics covered on the full-day sessions include actions, impacts and consequences, substance use and importation, fire safety, exploitation, and keeping safe, with the opportunity for students to explore appliances like fire engines and meet people who work on Jersey's front-line services.
Commenting on the sessions, Justice & BASC co-ordinator, Cirsty de Gruchy Moseley said: “We're always keen to offer a great day to students and we always want to know how well we did. Our surveys undertaken with students following the BASC days show that:
91% of students rated the day as Good or Excellent, and after the day:
- 87% of students better understood child exploitation
- 89% of students better understood the impacts of arson
- 87% of students better understood the impact drugs can have on their future
- 98% of students knew where to go and who to contact for support."
Cirsty added: “Following the Education Days, the BASC team and our front-line partners spent a day together reviewing the feedback from students and teachers and answering the key question, "How can we improve?"
“Our feedback shows that students really engage with the interactive nature of the day and we're always keen to make the sessions as interactive and engaging as possible. We want to thank all the schools who welcomed us and the teachers and students who supported these sessions.
“We are delighted that so many students and teachers found the BASC sessions useful, informative, and enjoyable. We're so grateful to our front-line colleagues who work to keep Islanders safe, for giving up their time and sharing their knowledge to make these days such a success.
“A special thanks to our front-line partners who bring the days to life."
