Islanders who want to continue filing joint tax returns should opt in by 30 September.
Since 1 January 2026, everyone in Jersey has been taxed independently. This means everyone is responsible for their own tax and will normally submit their own tax return.
Islanders who are married or in a civil partnership may be able to continue joint filing. They will be taxed independently but will complete one tax return as a couple.
Couples who want to continue filing a joint tax return must opt in by 30 September. They can do this by:
- applying online at gov.je/IndependentTax, or
- picking up a form at their local parish hall or at or the Government of Jersey building on Union Street
The Minister for Treasury and Resources, Senator Alan Maclean said: "Independent Taxation ensures all couples are treated equally, regardless of their marital status.
“We recognise that some Islanders may prefer to continue filing a joint return, particularly those who have managed their tax affairs in the same way for many years. We have listened to these concerns and provided eligible couples with an option to continue filing jointly.
“Independent Taxation is an important reform that creates a fairer and more consistent tax system. At the same time, we want to give couples flexibility and choice in how they manage their tax."
