Western Bus Gate officially opens following major infrastructure upgrade

20 July 2026

The Government of Jersey has officially opened the Western Bus Gate, marking the completion of a significant infrastructure investment at one of the Island's busiest and most heavily trafficked junctions.

Bus priority through this key transport corridor will help deliver more reliable and predictable journeys, reduced delays and improved waiting facilities for bus passengers.

The project has modernised critical transport infrastructure while creating a more attractive and accessible gateway to St Helier.

The scheme has delivered a range of long-term improvements designed to enhance the resilience, safety and reliability of the Island's road network.

These include:

  • new traffic signal controller built to the latest standards
  • upgraded drainage infrastructure
  • modern low-energy lighting
  • replacement street lighting columns
  • enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists

Alongside these infrastructure improvements, the project has transformed the surrounding public realm with disability-compliant paving, additional cycle parking, new seating and landscaping, and planted trees that will contribute to a greener and more welcoming environment.

The works have also included infrastructure to support the continuing development of the International Finance Centre area and wider St Helier.
