A new fostering model is launching in Jersey to encourage more islanders to foster children and teenagers. Called The Hive, the community-based model of care aims to recruit more foster carers by offering stronger support, shared care and a sense of belonging for carers and children.
The Hive brings foster families together into small, connected groups so carers have shared support, guidance, and a stronger sense of community.
The model takes its name from a beehive. In the same way a hive works best when everyone is connected, The Hive places an experienced hub home carer at the centre, similar to a queen bee, supporting and guiding the wider family of foster carers around them.
When it’s complete, the model will see a small group of fostering households come together to form a hive, building trusted relationships over time. Children and carers get to know each other, creating a consistent and familiar group that offers reassurance and support. Each carer plays an important role, with shared responsibility and care at the heart of the model.
The hub home carer plays a role similar to a grandparent within an extended family, offering leadership, advice, and encouragement. This includes hosting regular social activities, coffee mornings and training sessions that help carers connect and learn from each other. They also provide practical support, like planned sleepovers for children when carers need a break or extra help.
The model is designed to address some of the key challenges in fostering, including isolation and emotional strain. Early support and shared problem-solving help carers feel more confident and supported.
People interested in fostering are encouraged to find out more by popping along to one of the upcoming information sessions.
The fostering team will be in the central market on the following days:
- Friday 15 May, 10am to 2pm
