Who we are
Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ) is part of Family Nursing and Home Care (FNHC) and is funded through charitable donations. It is supported by representatives from many organisations, which include:
- Government of Jersey (various departments)
- Fire and Rescue Service
- Ambulance Service
- Headway Jersey
- Jersey Coastguard
- States of Jersey Police
- The Bosdet Foundation
- St John Ambulance Jersey
- Ports of Jersey
We want every child to explore, play, have fun and get muddy in the process, to develop and reach their full potential. We believe it is the right of every child to grow up in an environment that keeps them safe from serious injury, disability or death.
We also believe that a balanced approach to assessing the risks and benefits of an action reduces the number of children failing to become healthy, happy adults because of an unintentional injury in childhood.

What we do
Under the management of FNHC, who also fund the role of a part time Co-ordinator, CAPJ works in partnership with a number of voluntary and statutory organisations, to ensure children in Jersey are safe from unintentional injury. Safety Sam is CAPJ’s larger-than-life mascot and he visits schools, fetes and events promoting child safety.
CAPJ strongly believes that children need opportunities to learn, explore and have fun whilst managing risk, and aims to provide education for all children up to 12 years of age, enabling them to do this. CAPJ is also available to parents and carers, childcare providers, educators, and anyone else who needs advice or information about keeping children safe.
Over each school year the CAPJ Co-ordinator delivers a number of talks to primary school children across the island:
- ‘Speak Dog and Stay Safe’ is for Year 1 children
- ‘Make The Call’ is aimed at Key Stage 2 students
- ‘Safety Sam Comic talks’ are designed for children in Years 2 and 3
- each July, CAPJ runs the annual Safety In Action event for all Year 5 students
We have also run campaigns focusing on fall prevention, blind cord safety, fire work safety and swimming pool safety. We are available to nurseries and playgroups to talk to parents and/or younger children upon request.
We can provide subsidised home safety equipment including stairgates and harness reins at the request of a family’s Health Visitor.
We also review data from the Hospital to identify any trends in accidents and to ensure that the campaigns we run remain current and necessary.
