Language Policy for Jersey Education

About the Language Policy for Jersey Education

The first Language Policy for all Government schools and colleges has been launched as part of the major reform of Jersey’s education system.

The new Language Policy has been published under the Education Reform Programme, which highlighted English as an additional language (EAL) as an area for improvement and action.

The Education Reform Programme was established following an independent funding review in 2019, which led to millions of additional funding approved for the school system in the Government Plan. A total of £500,000 was allocated to improve English as an additional language.

There are 62 different languages spoken in schools across the Island. Recent figures show that there are a total of 3,062 multilingual learners from nursery to Year 13, which represents 26% of the school population.

The three most spoken languages of multi-lingual pupils in Jersey are Portuguese, Polish and Romanian.
