Aim of the study
Studies indicate that school run traffic exposes children to elevated pollutant concentrations at school entrances.
To address air pollution around schools, we, with the help of air quality experts Ricardo, conducted an air quality monitoring study to assess pollutant exposure along popular main roads and backstreet walking routes to and from schools in Jersey.
Rouge Bouillon and Wellington Hill
The survey involved two key components:
Fixed air quality monitoring
We installed sensors outside Rouge Bouillon school and on Wellington Hill close to the drop off area to Beaulieu school for several months to measure the air quality.
Walking routes survey
Over 2 days, we walked various routes to Rouge Bouillon school and on Wellington Hill.
We measured levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter during morning drop-off and afternoon collection times.
This was carried out to show the difference in levels of air pollution children are exposed to when walking on the main roads, compared to the quieter back roads.

St Luke's school
We also worked with the traffic team and Ricardo to determine if air quality improved following street closures outside St Luke's School as part of our School Street Pilot Scheme.
How we conducted the survey
We monitored air quality during the partial closure of Elizabeth Street. Sensors were placed on Elizabeth Street and in the early years playground next to Route De Fort.
Elizabeth Street is closed to motorised traffic from 7.45am to 9.15am and 2pm to 3.30pm Monday to Friday during school term time.
