Glass collection and recycling

Your parish glass collection dates

All parishes have a kerbside glass collection service for glass bottles and jars. Your glass collection will be a monthly or weekly service depending on where you live.

If you live in St Helier your road may not have a kerbside glass collection service. You'll need to recycle your glass at one of St Helier's glass bin recycling locations.

You need your own glass bin to leave outside your home for collection. Contact your parish hall to find out what containers are suitable.

If you include other things in your bin that aren't glass, it may not be emptied. You will need to remove these items before putting your glass bin out for the next collection.

You can also recycle your glass bottles and jars at the Mini Recycling Centres or at La Collette household recycling facilities. 

How to recycle glass

Glass can only be recycled if it's free from all other materials, including plastic bags. Before recycling your glass bottles and jars, you should:

  • rinse them
  • remove corks, caps or lids
  • remove plastic labels (paper labels can be left on)

You can recycle broken glass bottles and jars.

Do not thrown away glass in your general waste because it cannot be processed at the Energy from Waste facility. Glass will melt during the incineration process, cool and then set. It must be removed manually and can cause severe mechanical problems.

Glass we do not collect

You cannot put certain types of glass in your glass bin. We do not collect:

  • lightbulbs
  • flat glass (for example, mirrors, windows or sheet glass)
  • ceramics and crockery (for example, cups or plates)
