Request

A

I would like to know how many dogs there are in the Island.

B

If possible I would also like to know how many rescue dogs were brought into the island during 2016.

Response

A

The information you have requested in relation to the number of dogs there are in the Island is not held by the States of Jersey. The information may be held by the parishes and you may wish to re-direct this part of your request to foi@parish.gov.je

You can also find out more about making an FOI request to the parishes at http://www.parish.gov.je/Pages/FOI.aspx

B

Dogs are able to move freely between the UK and Jersey and as such we do not hold any data relating to the import of dogs, rescue or otherwise, from the UK.

Anyone bringing dog(s) from European Union (EU) countries (including the Republic of Ireland) that are changing ownership (ie to be sold or re-homed) must import them as a commercial import and obtain the required TRACES health certification.

The total number of dogs imported via the EU to be sold or re-homed in 2016 was 136, of which we believe at least 113 were rescue dogs.

We have no records of any rescue dogs arriving in Jersey from outside the EU.
