Primary school teaching staff turnover 2009 to 2016 (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 26 January 2017.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

I would like an update to a previous FOI from December 2015:

Primary school teaching staff turnover from 2009 to 2015 (FOI)

A

How many staff have left La Moye School since last year?

B

Why do so many staff leave La Moye School?

Perhaps a sample of reasons could be provided, rather than anything which would identify individuals.

C

Could you break that down into qualified teachers and teaching assistants? Not admin assistants or lunchtime assistants.

Response

A and C

In order to update the previous FOI, published on 18 December 2015, the data has been provided in the same format, and in order to aid comparison, the details of the previous request are included.

Please see attached spreadsheet for details of staff turnover in all States of Jersey primary schools.

However, the Education Department is unable to provide the details broken down for teachers and teaching assistants as the numbers are small. Therefore, Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law has been applied to this request.

The data includes, as per the previous request, teachers, teaching assistants and ancillary staff.

B

The Education Department has determined that the reasons given by an individual for leaving the employment of any States of Jersey school is personal information and therefore absolutely exempt under Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011.

The end reasons for leaving the employment of any States of Jersey school include:

  • acting up
  • contract expiry
  • deceased
  • dismissal
  • early retirement
  • failed probation
  • family reasons
  • ill health
  • inter-department transfer
  • leaving jersey
  • move within department
  • other employment in Jersey
  • retirement
  • secondment
  • voluntary early retirement

Exemptions

Article 25  Personal Information

(1)     Information is absolutely exempt information if it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005.

(2)     Information is absolutely exempt information if –

(a) it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is not the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005; and

(b)  its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.
