Request

Coin collecting is apparently ever more popular. Collectors have individual ways of enjoying their hobby but common to most is the desire to understand the very numbers of individual coins in existence. The coins in question fall into two broad categories "circulated" - the coins on the street and "uncirculated" - those coins produced for ceremony, special events and so on and are produced in lesser numbers and not generally available on the street.

My specific questions are:

A

On behalf of the Channel Islands and Jersey Government what specific office is responsible for recording the production numbers of both circulated and uncirculated coins

B

Is the department at Question 'A' regulated under the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 and are therefore expected to answer questions on coin mintage numbers?

Response

A

Under the Currency Notes (Jersey) Law 1959 and the Decimal Currency (Jersey) Law 1971 the Minister for Treasury and Resources has the power to issue notes and coins for Jersey.

Administration of the circulated and uncirculated notes and coins is the responsibility of the Treasury and Resources Department within the States of Jersey.

There is no single body responsible for the issue of notes and coins across the Channel Islands.

B

The States of Jersey Treasury and Resources Department is a Scheduled Public Authority under the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011.
