A search for descriptions of βSepticβ or βSepsisβ in the ICD-10 code table shows the following associated Level 4 ICD-10 codes:
βA40 | βA41 | βA42 | βA02 |
βA23 | βA32 | βA54 | βB377 |
β I2601 | βI76 | βG9341 | βO03 |
βO04 | βO07 | βO08 | βR65 |
Of these codes only two appear as a final classification of death (i.e. have been ultimately attributed as the cause of death) of Jersey residents over the period 2015-2017: A403 (sepsis due to Streptococcus pnueumoniae) and A419 (Sepsis, unspecified organism).
See the table below for a breakdown of the deaths by these codes, rounded to the nearest five. Where numbers are less than five the exact figure is not provided as it is considered this could lead to the identification of individuals.
βTotal resident deaths | β760 | β830 | β810 |
βA403 | β<5 | β<5 | β<5 |
βA419 | β<5 | β10 | β5 |

The guidance and rules for coding sepsis have been updated each year which means data is incomparable between these three years.
The table below shows a count of the number of inpatient episodes coded as sepsis as per each particular yearβs coding rules.
β | β2015 | β2016 | β2017 |
βTotal | β343 | β233 | β295 |
βAge <16 | β87 | β40 | β6 |
C
None of the deaths attributed to sepsis occurred to a person aged under 16.
