Economic cost of teachers strike action (FOI)

In the UK when strike action occurs a calculation is made as to the effect of that action on the economy. During the debate on 26 March in the States Assembly no mention was made of an estimate of the effect of strike action by teachers to the economy of Jersey by any minister. The Government of Jersey must have calculated the financial impact of each day's strike action.

What is the monetary cost to schools of the NASUWT action in refusing to cover absent colleagues per day of the dispute? And the total cost to the States?

What is the estimated cost in childcare to parents from the NEU's action per day. And in total?

C

What has been the estimated number of working hours lost to businesses as a result of strike action? What does this equate to in monetary terms?

D

What is the total estimated impact of strike action on the economy of the Island since the start of 2019?

The information requested is not held for the purposes of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011.

Details relating to individuals and the effect of strike action on businesses / economy have not been collected.

Financial information will be published in July in relation to budgetary consequences of the non-payment of teachers on strike days, once this is available and has been collated.

Article 3 Meaning of “information held by a public authority”

For the purposes of this Law, information is held by a public authority if –

(a) it is held by the authority, otherwise than on behalf of another person; or

(b) it is held by another person on behalf of the authority.

Article 4 Meaning of “information to be supplied by a public authority”

(1) For the purposes of this Law, the information held by a public authority at the time when a request for the information is received is the information that is to be taken to have been requested.

(2) However, account may be taken of any amendment or deletion made to the information between the time when the request for the information was received and the time when it is supplied if the amendment or deletion would have been made regardless of the request for the information.
