Request

As we are soon approaching the 12th Anniversary of the debacle at Haut de La Garenne which we were told by the Wiltshire Report, featured a Deputy Chief of Police who was unqualified and inexperienced to head such an inquiry. A rightfully suspended Chief of Police. An alleged nameless dead child that turned out to be a piece of coconut, a former States Member who got carried away with it all so much that he told the Media in 2008 that there could be six bodies buried at Haut de La Garenne, and the ridiculous media frenzy that followed afterwards mainly fuelled by online tittle-tattle.

I would like to know the following -

A

Have the States of Jersey ever been approached to make a either a film or documentary about this farcical chain of events in 2008?

B

It is true that UK Police forces use the Haut de La Garenne episode in order to train Police officers how not to use the Media?

C

Do the States of Jersey Police have safeguards in place to stop such a ludicrous chain of events ever happening again?

D

Has there been any measurable damage done to Jersey's excellent worldwide reputation because of these 2008 events as at the time I understand advertising for holidays in the Island were suspended and it was on the eve of a recession?

Response

A

Information not held. No records of any such request being received.

B

Information not held.

C

The Wiltshire report recommended that the post of Detective Superintendent be created within the States of Jersey Police and filled with a suitably qualified officer. This was actioned and completed with the appointment of Detective Superintendent Gull in July 2011, four weeks before the Victoria Crescent murders.
