Request

Regarding records that have been deposited by members of the public with the Jersey Archive, please supply the following:

A

The number, if any, of records that were deposited with the Jersey Archive more than two years ago which have still not been catalogued and indexed by the Jersey Archive and which remain unavailable to the public in any form despite the depositor or owner of the records having consented to public access.

B

State what the current expected waiting time is for owners / depositors of records to receive a response from the Jersey Archive confirming that their deposits have been catalogued, indexed and made available to the public.

Response

Please note that the Jersey Archive is not a Scheduled Public Authority under the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011, but provides the following assistance in the interest of transparency.

A

All records that are transferred to Jersey Archive are accessioned within a week of their arrival. The accession record includes a basic description of the contents of the records and their covering dates.

Lists of accessions are published in the Channel Islands Family History Society Journal and on The National Archive website which can be viewed at the following link:

Jersey Archives

Details of accessions can also be obtained by emailing enquiries@jerseyheritage.org.

Members of the public can make an appointment to view new accessions at Jersey Archive before a collection is fully catalogued, unless there are access restrictions under data protection legislation or if the collection is extremely fragile and requires urgent conservation work.

Therefore there are no collections where the depositor or donor of the records has agreed to public access and the condition of the documents is appropriate that are not available for the public to view at Jersey Archive.

B

Waiting times for owners / depositors of records will vary depending on our cataloguing priorities and the contents of the collection.

The cataloguing priorities are listed within our cataloguing policy which is available on our website at the following link:

Jersey Archive - Cataloguing Policy

Donors and depositors are welcome to discuss expected cataloguing priorities and timescales with the Jersey Archive as these will vary from collection to collection.
