Police protocol for child welfare checks (FOI)

Police protocol for child welfare checks (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 22 March 2021.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Since February 2019 to February 2021, what is the States of Jersey Police procedure when they must make a child welfare check? For example, the police receive a call about a child’s welfare, what is the protocol?

Response

Whilst it is not possible to provide information covering all possible responses, to every conceivable situation, any Police response to a call about a child’s welfare will be considered on a case by case basis and will often include partner agencies in consultation.

The States of Jersey Police assess all calls for assistance using the ‘Thrive’ principle.

  • threat

  • harm

  • risk

  • investigation

  • vulnerabilities and

  • evidence

The actions taken will be dependent on the assessment of the information received and any information already held. The ongoing safeguarding of the child is always the priority.

If the requestor or anybody else has concerns for the welfare of a child, they should contact the States of Jersey Police directly on 01534 612612 or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555111
