Would you please let me have the statistics for the past five years for rates for C-section, instrumental deliveries, epidurals and inductions in the maternity department?

Response

The requested rates, shown in the following table, are all live birth deliveries and exclude miscarriages and terminations. Multiple births such as twins are counted as one delivery.

Definitions used

C-sections:

Includes both elective and emergency caesarean sections as recorded by the maternity department at the time of delivery.

Instrumental Deliveries:

Includes all deliveries where instrument use recorded by the maternity department (including those that are caesarean section).

Inductions:

Includes all deliveries where a method of induction has been recorded by the maternity department.

Epidurals:

Included all deliveries where “Epidural” has been recorded as method of pain relief by the maternity department.
